Umm… what happened to my hermit crab?

What the heck happened to my hermit crab? I come to check on him one day and I find that he [lost/shedded/pulled off?] most of his legs. (…!!??)My theory is that he shedded his legs because he was getting bigger, but I thought they were just supposed to move into a new shell. I thought their exoskeleton was supposed to grow with them. And he’s not even bigger, he got smaller without his legs. I’m kind of scared that that was his way of telling me that he needs a new shell, and that I’m being a bad hermit crab keeper, but he has a shell in the tank that is bigger. ???

Did he molt,or something? Hermit crabs molt. A molted hemrit crab looks smaller instead of bigger. I kinda know some stuff about hermit crabs.
